Internet history

The internet is originally a development from a cooperation between the military research agency ERPA ( Advanced research project agency) and a group of amerikcan universities - the ARPANET Project. ARPA saw a need for a smooth communication network between govermental (and especially military) computers where data on every computer could be accessible for any other when needed and when security considerations permitted it.

The first network made using the developed standards had four independently working sites UCLA, Stanford Research Institute (SRI), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and telecommunication lines so that the nodes could communicate directly or indirectly through another node.

This was the first beginning of the internet. The network was a success. Later on other university campuses joined the network, and also site open for the general public.

After the successful demonstration of this network consisting of many independently workin nodes, the military that had financed the project built its own secret or closed networks based on the same technology. The original network, however kept on being open for the common public and grew continually with steadily new nodes.

After some time also any private company or person could connect to the network.

The internet will not work without some programs connecting users or superior programs on each node. These programs need to know in some way in what direction to send data or to connect.

Originally each node needed to know the physical adress of each other node and the logical address on assers on each node in order to connect successfully.

In order to make it easier for each node the protocol TCP/IP was developet. TCP/IP make it possible to communicate physically and logically without having large tables of physical node adresses. Neither is it necessary to connect to the other node. The data is divided in packages and sent or resceived as small letters. The protocol also compose the data from each package in the right order when reseceived.

Together with TCP/IP also higher pårotocols were developed, as for example FTP or file transphere protocol.

At the beginning only primitive chat programs and file transfere programs were awailable.  In the 90eth more advanced services and standards and programs for these were introduced.

Worls wide webs (WWW) is such a service, and this is the service with which most person snow access the internet. The assets on the net is given an URL name, that actually is a mnemonic namae used istead of the TCP/IP address. The service use programs called Internet browsers and a protocol called HTTP.
