About Tribulus - Tribulus terrestris and related species

Botannical facts: Tribulus is a genus of herbs, botanically classified as Division: Magnoliophyta, Class: Magnoliopsida, Order: Zygophyllales, Family: Zygophyllaceae. Tribulus terrestris is the best known species.  Other species are T. cistoides, T. longipetalus, T. micrococcus, and T. zeyheri Tribulus species are generally considered weeds, but some are used as decorative plants.

In warm region tribulus is perennial, but in colder regions it grous as an annual plant.

The flowers ar hermaphroditic with five petals and they are pollinated by insects. The plant grows as a wine.  The leaves are compund with oppositely set component leaves.
 

Habitat and growth condition: The genus is found in many warm regions, but also grows in colder zones like the south of Europe. It is most aundant in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

Production, preparation and use: Mostly the fruit is used. The fruit is available as dried powder. Also ectracts of blends of the active components are made for use in herbal medicine. The recomanded dose when used alone as a powder  is 0.75 to 1.25 grams per day. The powder should be blended in meals to avoid stomach upset.

Effective constituents and their basic effects: Tribulus contains alkaloids, flavonids, steroidal saponins (furostanol glycosides and spirostanol glycosides) and protodioscin. It is not clear what substances that make the medical effects, and exactly how these effects occur.

A basic effect maybe stimulation of the production of luteinizing hormone, DHEA and estrogen. These hormones stimulate many activities in the genitals and the body elswhere. For example will the increased production of LH in turn stimulate a greater production of the male sex hormone testosterone. The increased amount of LH and testosterone will give the resulting medical effects.

Medical effects: Tribulus  stimulates libido and sexual functions, especially the erctile power.

It may also improve male fertility.

Tribulus may stimulate the power of muscles and the endurance during muscle work, or at least it may gives a feeling of greater power. Therefore it is often used by athletes as a training supplement.

Side effects: If taken alone without being blended, or taken in higher doses than 1.25 grams of dried powder, it can upset the stomach.

Traditional medical uses: Tribulus has been used in China and India for centuries as a sexual enhancer and as a tonic drug.

It has also traditionally been used to enhance urine production, for urinary ailments and against goat.

Uses in modern herbal drugs: The herb is used in drugs for men to increase libido and sexual functions, and in drugs for athletes to stimulate strengthe and endurance.

Some athletes takes testosterone (often illegally) as atraining sipplement. This will however lower the bodie's own testosterone production. Then tribulus is used to normalize the testosterone production of the body again.

Uses in pharmacological products: Athletes in eastern europe used tribulus extracts in the seventies and eighties to enhance sport performance.
