About the breasts in women and men

Both woman and men have breasts containing the same structures and capable of housing the same erotic feelings. The main difference is that the mamary glands and connected channels in the women's breast being enhanced and developet to produce milk.

The term "breast" in the English language and many other germanic languages is unfortunately ambiguous, because it also is used about the whole area inside and around the chest. You have of course the words tits and boobs, but those words are regarded vulgar, sexually laden, urban or very informal. The latin based languages use more presize terms, like or derived from the corresponding Latin word mamma, plural mammae. Mamma - mammae are also used in English as medical terms for breast.

The main structures in the breast are: In the sentre of the breast there is the nippple. Around the bipple there is a darkened round area called the areola. Inside the breasts are the mamary glands that produce milk by the woman. Also men have these glands, but they do nor produce milk and they are only rudimentary, and much smaller.

The glands are branched and divided in spherical or ovoid areas xalled lobes or lobuli. There are ducts between the lobes which collect the milk from the whole gland and those channels lead the milk outwards towards the nipples. Between these lobulated glands there is fatty tissue. Under all these structures there are the breast muscles, pectoralis major and pectoralis minor. The breast muscles contribute greatly to the shape of the breasts.

The skin around the nipples have enlarges hair sacks. The nipples themselves also have great hair sacks, but without easily visible hairs hairs. These hair sacks have msucles that uopon stimulating make the nipples hard and raised and the area around firm and knotty. This effect can be so great that the nipples get a sort of erection, even thoug the mechanism is different form the penile and clitoreal erections.

The development of the breasts

All mamary animals have several breast structurs along both sides of the breast and stomach area. By humans only one at each side in the breast area is fully develop to a visible and functional breast. Sometimes however also other of these breast grow to be visible.

Animals like dogs, cats and pigs have a whole rode of breasts with nipples along both sides of the breast and belly. In other animals, like cows and other bovine-like animals, only the breasts at the lower part of the abdomen are fully developed, and these are grown together to a structure called an udder.

By children up to the puberty only the nipples and the areola are clearly visible. The undelaying strucrtures  are there, but are seen only a slight thickness or pad at each side. During puberty the brests begin to grow. The mamary glands and ducts grow and mature and there will be deposited more fat around the glands. In women the mamary glands will mature to get capacity of producing milk upon hormonal stimulation. The nipples will also get greater and darker.

These changes are greatest in women, and usually only minor in men. Also in boys the mammary glands use to get bigger during puberty, and can often be felt as hard and sometimes tender lump under and around the breast nipples. These enlarged glands are often reduced back to a smaller size during the consecutive years.

However, both women and men vary according to how much the brests grow. A man getting more visible brests during puberty , is usually not unnormal or sick. The size of the breats are partly genetically controlled, but the nutrition during childhood, puberty and thereafter also determine. In the last 100 years the average size of the breasts have gradually enlarged. The circumpherence of the femal , breat area is by now 10 cm greater than that 100 years ago.

About breastfeeding

The mamary glands  begins to produce milk at the end of a pregnancy, so that the child usually can brestfeed right after birth. The pituitary hormone prolactine stimulate the onset of milk production. However, the nervous signals produced by the sucking and enptying the breasts also stimulate to more production of milk.

When the baby is sucking on the nipple, the milk begins to flow. The milk can also be massaged or pumped out of the brest. The milk can also start reflelctorily to flow upon certain psycological and physical stimuli, for example when the child cries or feeds from the other breast.

The amount of milk produced, are individually very different, and has little connection with breasts size. Generally, milk production gradually automatically adapted to the child's needs: The more the child drinks (or the more milk that is pumped off), the more milk the breasts will produce. When one stops breastfeeding the child, the milk production will seace after a while and usually do not begin before the end of the next pregnancy.

Since breastfeeding is important for both child and mother, it is recommended to breastfeed children at any time in at least one year. In up to half a year, kids can compleatly nourish from the breast.

The sexual feelings and reactions in the breasts

The breasts and especially the brest nipples and the areola are capable of sensing sexual lust. Upon lustful stimulation these areas will react by hardening, getting a knotty tecture and by a type of erection. It is reported that some women are capable of orgasm after brest stimulation. Probably the orgasm do not originate only from the breasts, but originate from reflectory reactions and feelings in the genital zone.

Reseacrh suggest that stimulation of the breast nipples of a woman often results in contractions of the uterus. These contractions are useful after birth. The sucking by the beby stimulates the uterus to contract and regain its normal unpregnant-state shape. The orgasmic reactions may also originate in the uterus and the inner vagina upon these stimulated contractions.

One seldome hears that men get orgasm after only breast stimulation, but it may occur. However, also by men the breasts are a lustful zone sexually and stimulating the breast nipples and their surrounding feels lustful at the nipple area and it also enhances the man's general arousal.

The breasts in culture

The attention against the breasts and the consept of the ideal breast size and shape have varied in western culture. The breast ideal is usually firmly connected to the general body ideal.

An old westen ideal for women has been the firm type with great attributes. In the beginning of the 1900eth sentury, the fit and sporty woman with small but firm brists began to be the ideal.

By the 1950eths the Holywood incpirex culture made the generally slim woman, but with great and curvy breasts and other attributes, to the standard ideal.

In a short period in the 60eths the super-thin anorectically-looking woman with flat breasts was higly fasionable. This Twiggy-ideal  had the origine in the fashion industry.

Since then the fashion industry has greatly dominated the dieals for female appearence.

By now, superslim anorectic women with enormous balloon-like breasts seem to be the standard idel consept. Some fashion houses try to react against this ideal, but in a wrong way by banning all women and men that are naturally slim or thin without being anorectic.

The breast-ideal for men is more constant. The standard ideal is a muscular man with fairly great breasts that mainly get their shape by a ample msusular size. A slim and  less muscular man with greater breasts than the average is seen as abnormal in the popular culture and the medical community tend to think in the same way, even though there is no scientific valid reason to think so

A over-weight man with large fat-loaded breasts is usually not regarded as abnormal. Since the average population in the western societies has steadily gain in weight the last years, this type of man is gradually becomming the standard and regarded as the normal man-type.

The breast and body ideals have very little to do with sexual attraction. Instead it is a tendency supported by the leaders in the society to exagerate corporel attributes that support the standard patterns of roles  people have in the society, and to make profit from these ideals.

The adorance of big-breasted women may also partly have its origine in homo-fobia. By pretending to adore and worhsip over-exaggerated female attributes, many man try to signal to the general society thet they do not house any homosexual feelings and tendencies.

About words for breasts

The English  term "breasts" and similar terms in other Germanic languages is a nunfortunate label, since breast also mean the whole upper par of the torso. The English language and other German languages have exact words denoting breasts, like tits and boobs. However these words are regarded as vulgar or sexually loaded and cannot be used in all circumstances without getting a bad effect.  Medically and anatomically the breasts ar called mamma (sing) and mammae (plural).
