Minerals in the topaz group are hydroxy-fluoro-silicates of aluminium, having the chemical formula  Al₂(OH,F)₂SiO₄ , with varying ratio between the hyroxy- and fluorine components. Topaz is found as crystals of 6 sides with equal 120 degree angles between them and with a pyramidal top with triangular sides -ortho-rhombic crystals. The longest sides of the crystal are often striated.

The hardness of the crystals are of the grade 8.0. The crystals can easily be cleaved in one plane, and unfortunate impacts on the stone can easily let the stone brake along the cleavage direction.

Topaz is fairly seldome found in the nature, but still found wide around the Earth, especially at the places Ural and Ilmen mountains of Russia, in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Pakistan, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Flinders Island, Australia, Nigeria, the United States, Brazil and Burma.

Topaz cystals typically develop in granitic pegmatites or in vapor cavities in rhyolite lava flows which ar found in the Topaz Mountain in western Utah.

Yellow topas:  Pure topaz is colorless and transparent. The stone can however have many colors due to bound water and impurities of foreign elements. Colors found are wine-red, yellow, pale gray, reddish-orange, blue or blue brown. Topaz is often irradiated or heated to give it a more dezirable color.
