Some general words about health and aging

The aging process is for the greater part no mistery anymore. It simply consists of daily damages done on the macrosopic, tissue, cellular and genetic levels, that add  up as the years are passing. These damages have spesific causes like oxidating agents, sun beams, mechanical wear and tear, psychological stress, lack of some nutritional components and too much of others like fat. The factors causing aging, also causes other diseases like cancer and  coronary heart disease. Both aging and these diseases can in great extend be prevented with the knowledge possesed today, and the damages can in great extend be reversed. The components to achieve this are:

-Adequate dayly food containing vegetables, fruit,  fish, seafood, with a moderate amount of  fat, and with most of the fat supply comming from sources like olive, fish, nuts, etc.

-Suplements of specific nutritional components like vitamins, minerals, lecitin and some  essential fatty acids.

-Adequate training, rest and stress-reduction. In order to achieve this, natural relaxing agents or spesific tools for meditation or relaxation may be usefull or neccessary.

Growth Hormone and lack of growth hormone in aging 

Growth hormone (GH), or somatotropin, produced by the anterior pituitary, affects the physical appearance dramatically since it determines an individual's size and height. It is usually produced in greatest quantities during childhood and adolescence, when most body growth is occurring, but is still produced (though in lower quantities) in adults to aid in continued protein synthesis and normal cell division and replacement. The bulk of the effect accomplished by hGH is performed by a related hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), which is released predominantly by the liver and, to some extent, by other tissues in response to the presence of hGH. It is one of the primary hormones of importance for maintaining optimal cellular performance. Human growth hormone (hGH) is a long chain amino acid molecule produced by the anterior pituitary gland (hypophysis), located at the base of the brain. It is a large fragile protein molecule with a molecular weight of 20,000. 

The problem in the past with human Growth Hormone has been that it is broken down in the stomach by the bile acids and was not absorbed into the system. Now, a substance that stimulates IGF-1 called Pro hGH is available orally.

Human Growth Hormone (hGH) promotes growth in children and plays an important role in adult metabolism. HGH acts on many different tissues to promote healthy metabolism.

It was first isolated in 1956 and its structure was identified in 1972. Until the mid-1980's the only source of hGH was from pituitary glands collected post mortem. Today hGH is available in larger quantities through the technique of genetic engineering and, consequently, a number of conditions apart from the classical growth hormone insufficiency can be treated. 


Growth hormone declines with age in every animal species that have been tested to date. In humans, the amount of growth hormone after the age of 21 to 31 falls about 14% per decade, so that the total 24-hour growth hormone production rate is reduced in half by the age of 60. In numerical values, we produce on a daily basis about 500 micrograms at 20 years of age , 200 micrograms at 40 years , and 25 micrograms at 80 years old. 

The lack of growth hormone in aging, causes directly many of the aging symptoms of the skin, as for example the thinning and declention of collagen content. It also makes it more difficult  for the skin to regain itself after injury, for example injury caused by sun radiation.

The easiest way to measure growth hormone in the body is by mesuring plasma IGF-1 levels. Under 350 IU is considered evidence of deficiency. Between the ages of 20 to 40 years, less than 5% of healthy men have less than 350 IU per liter of IGF-1 levels. But after 60, 30% of apparently healthy men have this low amount. And after age 65, about half the population is partially or wholly deficient in growth hormone. 

Total daily hGH secretion declines in humans with increasing age. "Elderly" levels are reached by age 35-40. 

There are many hormones which work with growth hormone and can help it work more effectively in the body. They are Estrogen, Progesterone, Melatonin, DHEA, and Thyroid Hormone. 

Estrogen: Slows the loss of minerals from bones and increases blood clotting, however, it decreases oxygen metabolism to the cells and is known to be a factor in breast and uterine cancer. 

Progesterone: Essential for the metabolism of glucose and the proper formation of bones, progesterone stimulates the production of new heart cells in the body and suppresses cancer growth. 

Melatonin: Produced naturally in the brain by the pineal gland, it stimulates the production of growth hormone and reduces free-radical damage. Melatonin has the ability to stabilize the body's biological rhythms and stimulate the immune system. 

DHEA: One of the most powerful hormones for improving brain function, DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is the most abundant hormone found in the bloodstream. The function of DHEA is to serve as a precursor for all other hormones in the body by supplying the body with what it needs to maintain an optimum balance of all hormones that regulate metabolic functions. As we age, the level of DHEA declines dramatically. Low levels of DHEA are linked to such conditions as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, arthritis, and many other symptoms associated with aging. 

Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism in every cell. Without these hormones the body's altered metabolism can result in chronic fatigue, or depression. Thyroid hormones can also be extremely useful in overcoming decreased metabolism often associated with prolonged obesity.

The aging of the skin

The processes of aging differ in male and female skin.
In men, there is a gradual thinning of male skin with increasing age of approximately 1% per year. On the other hand the thickness of most women's skins remains surprisingly constant until the menopause, after which there is a significant and sometimes dramatic thinning with increasing age.
There is a relationship between skin thickness and collagen content in men of all ages. A similar relationship exists among women over 60 years of age, but it is less evident in younger women.
In adult skin, the features of aging are closely related to the total collagen content, which in both sexes decreases with increasing age, but at different rates. In later life women may look

older than men of the same age and similar experience of sun exposure, partly because their skin has a lower collagen content to start with. Another reason for the gender difference in skin collagen content may be the difference in male hormone production between men and women.
In women, estrogen and androgen output from the ovaries and adrenal glands falls after menopause, resulting in decreased collagen synthesis and repair.
Aging related to the failure of estrogen production at the menopause accentuates intrinsic aging, and together with photoaging may dramatically increase the apparent age of a menopausal woman.

Estrogen deficiency particularly affects the fibroblasts of the dermis, and thinning of the skin is primarily related to a decrease in the production of collagen. This decrease is relatedto a decline of bone mineral content with age, which can lead to the condition of osteoporosis. The fibroblasts are also responsible for the synthesis of the dermis ground substance, particularly glycoproteins and hyaluronic acid (which is able to bind water). The decrease in fibroblast activity with age accounts for the decreased dermal hydration.
Skin elasticity decreases with age, but the effect is more marked in women than in men.
In the epidermis, a lack of estrogen slows down the activity of the basal keratinocytes,and consequently leads to epidermal atrophy. This atrophic fragile skin is less well protected by the normal surface film of lipids, because of the slow decline in sebum secretion experienced by everyone as they age. The stratum corneum barrier is less effective, and the skin may develop reactions to irritants, particularly if skin care has been inadequate or too aggressive.
