How are cosmetic products composed physically

Cosmetic products are traditionally composed of a blending of a water face, a fatty face and a gas face. Cosmetic products can also contain fine grains of solid substances. Solid substances used, are usually such with a very low grade of dureness, especially talc, usually called talcum. Very fine metallic solids can also be used in certain cosmetic products to give them a silvery or golden appearance.

The water, and the fatty substances both give the product the wanted consistance and are solvent for working pharmacological substances or coloured substances. The water and the fatty susbtances can also by themselves have pharmacological and estetic effects.

The fatty medium is usally suspended in the watery medium in the shape of small drops. The opposite may also be true in products with a very hard and fatty appearance.

The gas that is spread in the product as small boubles also helps to give the product the right consitance. The product can be easier to apply in thin layers when there are many small gass boubles distributed in the product, and the consumer can also thereby spare material.

The manufacture can also spare raw materials by letting a great portion of the volume be a sort of gas, and an extensive use of this practice borders to luring the consumer to pay a high prize for something that looks much but in reality is little.

Traditionally air has been used as a gassy medium, but now nitrogen is often used to hinder oxidation of the product. The gassy substance also can help to make the product more echonomical.

Such a blending is usually called an emulsion. The drops are held stabile by special substances whose molecules have a water solluble end and a fat solluble end. These molecules surround each fat drop. Soap is such a substance, and substances used often resamble soap or are soap variants. Also lecithine, a natural substance having this task in living cells, can be used.

The ratio between the amount of the fat medium, the water medium, and the gas boubles together with the viscosity of the fatty medium determine the consistance of the product. A lipstick for example will conist of hard fatty substances with small drops of water and small boubles of gas suspended.

By varying the amounts of the three faces in the product and the type pf fatty medim used, one can obtain products cahracterized as milks, lotions, creams, mousses or sticks.

A milk is the most fluid cosmetic.

Cosmetics with a greater viscosity, but still fairly fluid is usually called a lotion.

If the consistancy is more solid, it is usually called a cream.

A stick is the firmest kind of cosmetic. A stick consist usually of a very firm fatty medium with water droplets and gas boubles distributed.

Cosmetics consisting of a fairly firm basic material, but with much gass distributed is often called a mousse. Even though a mousse is fairly firm, it is easy to apply.

Cosmetics consisting mainly of solid substances is usually called a pouder. Most pouders also have some fatty substances integrated to increase the adhesivness of the substance.

The chemical properties of cosmetics

Traditionally natural fats have been used as a fatty medium, for example olive oil or other natural plant oils that are of the cathegory mono-usaturated. To get a harder consitance, plant waxes or saturated fat from the animal kingdom have traditionally been used. In many modern product syntetic or halfly syntetic fatty substances are also used. But some modern products only use natural oils, waxes or fat because these are considered more healthy.

Pharmacological substances dissolved in the two faces can be of variuous kinds, according to the effects wanted, for example: Plant oils, vitamins, minerals, antibiotica, or other anti-microbial agents.

Anti-microbial agents are either used in the products for therapeutic purposes, or are used to preserve the product itself from being attacked by microbes. Benzoic acid or parabens are frequently used preservatives. Parabens are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid, from which the name is derived. Common parabens include methylparaben (E number E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216) and butylparaben.

Colors or other estetic substances dissolved are tradiotionally plan calors or colored metal salts. colors from animals living in the sea are also sometimes used. Small metal corns are also sometimes used to give a shiney or blinking appearance.
