Uses and benefits of squalane and squalene

What is squalane

Chemically squalane is an alifatic saturated hydrocarbone, or oil, with the empirical formula C30 H62. It is colourless, flowting and binds very easily to a surface.  Its molecules consist of two saturated triperpenes composed head to head.

Being an oil, it is soluble in other oils, and other oily or waxy substances are esily soluble in squalan.

It is found in many natural resources, for example wheat germ oil, oilve oil and shark liver oil. It is also a natural ingredient in the oily protection of the human skin. The name of the compound means "shark stuff" from latin  "squalus=shark".

Squalane is used in the body to make cholesterole from. Cholesterole is an absolute necessary compound in the body, and is dangerous only in excessive amounts.

Squalane was formerly mostly produced from shark liver, but nowadays vegetabile sources like oilive oil and wheat germ oil are used as raw material.

Uses and benefits of squalane

Squalane has the ability to penetrate into the skin very rapidly, 2mm per second.

In the skin it exerts a protective role towards impacts from the environment. Squalane also hinders the growth of bacteria and other germs on the skin.

Because of the ease of penetration, squalane is a also very good medium for bringing other oil-soluble working substances into the skin.

Squalane has the ability to help protect the skin against sun damage. It protects against skin aging like brown spots.

Squalane helps to make the skin smooth, elastic and free from wrincles. In spite of its oily character, it is not felt greasy when applied to the skin.

Squalane helps to heal sores or cracks in the skin that have difficulty to heal.

Squalane may protect against cancer of the skin.

Because of all these effects, squalane is used in many cosmetic products boths as a working substance and as a carrier into thes skin for other working substances.

Because of its ability to make a smooth surface, it is used in many gliding oils or emusions to smear at the penis before intercource.

Being an oil with very good lubricating properties, it can be used to lobricate fine mechanical systems, as for example fishing gears, clocks and fishing lines.

Squalane can be used on the skin alone, as an ingredient of cosmertics, or blended with for example olive oil. A few drops are enoug at for example the face to give a therapeutic effect.

Squalane is non-toxic, but it can irritate the eyes or the respiratory system when inhaled. In greater amounts than a few drops, it may also irritate the skin. Squalane is not suitable for eating or drinking.

What is squalene

Squalene is very like squalane, having the empirical formula C30 H50. The main difference is that squalane is unsaturated, having 6 double bounds in each molecule. The oily properties are much the same as for squalane.

Squalene is also found in human sebum as a smearing substance. Also squalene is an intermediate in the syntesis of colesterole. Its main source is shark oil, but is also found in olive oil and wheat germ oil.

Benefits and uses of  squalene

The benefits of squalene on the skin are much the same as those of squalane.

It has very good anti-oxydative properties, due to its double bounds, and therefore protects the skin against chemicals from the environment.

Taken by mouth, squalene has anti-inflammatory properties, and helps to ammeliorate joint inflammation.

It seems that squalene also helps to protect against heart attack and against colon cancer.

The content of squalene is one reason why marine oils and olive oil helps protect the joints from arthritis, the heart against disease and helps to protect against cancer.

What about squalene as an additive to vaccines

Squalene is an unsaturated hydrocarbone and is therefore a much more reactive substance than squalane. Because of the reactivness it has the ability to trigger much more reactions in the body by the immune system than squalan.

Squalene is a natural component in the body tissues, and it is beneficial when it is at its right place. It is not dangerous to ingest either in reasonable amounts. In this case it is taken up by the digestive system and disributed naturale by means of lipoproteins like other fat-like compunds.

In some vaccines squalene has been added as an extra component in order to trigger a stronger immune reaction. It has been espcially used when the amount or antigens to be used in the vaccines has been available in too smaall amounts to trigger a good enough reaction and immunity by themselves.

When used in vaccines, squalene is introduced in the tissues without being shielded by carrier molecules or by cellular structuires. Squalane seems to cause unhealthy reactions when introduced this way, and it might be partly responcible for the Gulf war syndrome. Because of this Squalene is not allowed to be added to vaccines any more without special permission.

It has, however, agein been used in varients of the vaccine against the swine flu, H1N1, because the virus material to be used as antigene has been available in a too small amount. Because of this the safety of some vaqccines against swine flue as been challenged.
