The rules of the chess game
A chess board
has 64 squares arranged in 8 rows and 8 culomns. They are alternately white
and black or other colors with the same symbolic value. The square in each
corner on the left is always dark, because the squares being alternately
dark and light, determines the color of all the squares.
The players sit facing each other on either side. Each player has 16 pieces.
The pieces are moved according to specific rules for each type of piece.
It is
customary that the player having the light pieces begin the game and move
the first piece. Each player moves one piece at a time.
A player can move a piece into the same square as one of his opponent's
pieces, if the opponent's piece is in the allowed path of the first player's
piece. Then the player takes the opponet's piece out of the chessboard and
the game. This act is called to strike the opponent's piece.
The whole purpose of the game is to knock out the opponent's king by moving
a piece into the square where the king is.
The pieces and their line-up
before the game
Before the game rach opponents poses the pieces in the two rows closest to each
side.
The light pieces are arranged as follows in the innermost row from left
to right before the opening of the game:
Rook - knight (horse) - bishop - Queen - king- bishop - Knight (horse) - towers.
The dark pieces are arranged as follows in the innermost row from left to
right before beginning: Rook - knight (horse) - bishop - King - Queen -
bishop - Knight - rook.
This arrangement ensures that the queen and king always stand opposite each
other, the white king comes on a black field and the black king is on a
white field.
In the next row each player places only pawns, of which each player has 8.
How do the pieces go and turn
Most of the pieces, but the knight cannot jump over the opponent's pieces,
but move only along a free path. If an opponent's piece is in the allowed
way of the player's piece, the player can move his piece into the square of
the opponents piece and strike that piece out of the game. The player must
then set his piece in that square.
The pawns move one step right foreawrd every time, but the first time a pawn is
moved, it can be moved two steps. The pawns move just straight forward, and
never return. A pawn knocks out another piece at a queer angle, not straight forward. If
a pawn
has been moved two steps the first time, and not been moved once more, it
can however knock out another piece streight to left or right the first time.
The rook moves as many steps as the player
wants foreward, backward, right or left.
The knight moves on each time one step stright (foreward, backward, left or
right) and one step diagonally or one step diagonally and one step stright.
It can jump over a piece of the other player.
The bishops can move diagonnally so many steps as one whishes in a free path.
The queen is the game's most powerful piece. It can move as many steps one
whishes forward, backward, left, right and diagonally
.
The King can move one step at a time forward, backward, left, right and diagonally.
Certain special moves
If there are no pieces between the rook and the king, and neither the king
or rook has been moved before, one can moove the rook two steps in the
direction of the king and the king to the other side of the rook in one
draw.This is called castling. Castling is used to
reallocate the positions of strategic considerations.
The end of the play
The game is won when a player knocks out the king of the opponent.
If a king is in a position to be knocked out by the opponent player, the owner
of the king and his king are said to be "in chess". It is common courtesy to
make the opponent aware of this by
saying "chess", but one is not obliged to do so. The player who is in
chess must
then try to save away the king.
If the king is in chess and cannot move anywhere without still being in chess, the
player and his king are said to be "chess stelmate". Then the king can be
knocked out in the next move, and the player knocking out the king has won.
Theoretically, a player has not lost before the king is knocked out. If a player
puts the opponent in chess or even chess stelmate without understanding it, the game can continue, and
then his opponent can still win, but this
happens very seldom.
If a player's king is in
not in chess but cannot move it anywhere without getting in
chess, and he does not have any other pieces to move, the game is said to be
draw and neither of the players have won. A game ending in draw is called remis.
If a player has lost most of the pieces, and is in an impossible situation to win,
he may still try to manipulate the play into a drawn position and obtain remis.
If both players have lost so many pieces that it is practically impossible to make the opponent chess stelmate, there will also be a remis.
How Can You Become a Better Chess Player
Here are some simple tricks you can use to increase the probability of winning a
game of chess.
How to start a game of
chess
The purpose of the initial game is to give officers afree path to move and
strike as early as possible, but
avoid creating openings that your opponent can could threaten your king through.
When it comes to launching a game of chess, it pays to start with moving the rawns in front of the rooks and knights on the left side, and then engage the bishop and knight on this side. Then it pays to move the queen to the left so that it is ready to come out through the openings created.
It then often gives an advantage to move the tawn before the king or the tawn before the knight on the rigt side one step foreward. Then the bishop at that side have on opportunity to move foreward. After these initial mooves, it is often wise to move the knights out.
When the opponent has moved
a piece.
When the opponent has moved a piece, it pays to make a somewhat boring but very
useful sequence of investigations. Only when you have done this, consider what your
next move shall be.
- You must always see if the opponent's piece on the new place could threaten some of your pieces.
- You should always check to see if any of your pieces can trap your opponent's piece in the new location.
- You should check to see if your opponent's moves have uncovered other pieces close to the old place that can threaten some of your pieces.
- You should also watch for the opponent's moves have uncovered some pieces

- You should then think further on which opportunities further ahead that the
opponet har created for himself by his move.
- And you should think about what opportunities you have got by the last move of the opponent.
Before you even move a
piece, even
It's your turn to pull, and you've just found on a smart moves. Before you
actually make the move, you should always make certain routine reviews:
- Are any of your pieces threatened where they stand now
- Foes the planned moveopen up the threat to some of your own pieces?
- Will the piece threatened in the new place you move it to.
Destroy your opponent's plan
Midway through the game, it is often wise to make some strategic moves that destroy the opponent's plan. Here are some moves that can do this:
- You can make a castling. Thus your opponent must often totally relocate his positions to threaten your king.
-You can move up a tower one or two rows. The tower will protect an entire row that the opponent was going to use as a starting point for an attack.
- Move a tower up to the king. The tower will now protect the king against the pieces that can come in and directly threaten the king.
Move a tawn near the king a step forward. Now it becomes harder to take a pawn
in the row immediately in front of the king and then threateb the king.
Surprise your opponent
If you have an opponent that you often play with, he knows how often you play
on. You may want to vary your playing style. Thereby thwarting the strategy that
your opponent.
Element of surprise may in some cases be more useful that moves that are more
intelligent in a stright way.
Crash into the opponent's ranks
Sometimes it is
useful just to crash into the opponents rank with one or more pieces. To do so,
the first piece you use to run in with, must be protected by another of yours
pieces. If the first piece is taken, the piece used to take it with will then be
taken in your next move. Then you can often run foreward with a third piece an
threaten your opponent through the holes you have made in his defence.
